This obituary is from the U.S. Cemetery and Funeral Home Collection.
Nolan Douglas Ballard passed away April 2, 2011, in Logan, Utah. He was born June 27, 1948, in Logan, Utah, to Nolan Roundy and Nina Richards Ballard. Doug grew up on the family farm in Benson. He loved working on the farm and enjoyed country life. From an early age, he loved repairing and building things both mechanical and electronic. It was said of him that if he couldn't repair something, it couldn't be fixed. He loved science, history and airplanes. He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed looking on the bright side of life. Doug attended school at Benson Elementary, Smithfield Junior High and North Cache and Sky View High schools. He was active in band and on the lighting and sound crew for school productions. He attended Utah State University and Utah Technical College at Salt Lake, and graduated with a degree in electronics technology. He served a mission for the LDS Church in the Dallas, Texas, mission. He served in many church positions throughout his life. After graduating from college, Doug worked several years as an electronics repair technician for Lynn's Audio and Video. He then went to work at the Space Dynamics Lab where he built atmospheric instruments. He remained there the rest of his career. Doug met his sweetheart, Sheila Godfrey, on a blind date that was arranged by good friends. After a long courtship, they were married Oct. 1, 1993, in the Logan LDS Temple. They enjoyed traveling to national parks, Oregon and Orlando, Fla. They enjoyed being in the outdoors, going on picnics and taking fun, long drives together and with family and friends. Doug is survived by his wife Sheila of Logan, his mother, Nina Richards Ballard of Benson, Janice and Byron Shaver of West Valley City, Jay and Pat Ballard of Providence, LuAnn and Rod Wilhelm of North Logan, brother-in-law, Melvin Barrus of Nampa, Idaho, and by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Nolan Roundy Ballard and his sister, Beth Barrus. Many thanks to the caring staffs at Bridgerland Dialysis, Logan Regional, McKay Dee and Promise hospitals, and the Sunshine Terrace. Viewings will be held Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Nelson Funeral Home, 162 E. 400 North, Logan, and from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Eastridge LDS chapel, 1350 Eastridge Drive, Logan, Utah.
